Ah the curly cut… this topic has been one of the most controversial and debated topics of recent times. So what is a curly cut anyway? Typically, a curly cut is a dry haircut for people who wear their hair in its natural curl pattern. Many professionals along with hair care lines have developed their own approach to cutting curly hair. Although the curly cut is continuing to grow in popularity, there are still people who swear by only cutting hair in its stretched state. So what is the right way to cut curls? You guessed it, there isn’t one, but this is the most important thing you should know before you book your next haircut for your curly hair.

How do you wear your hair the majority of the time?

The answer to this question will help guide your conversation with your stylist. Are you someone who always wears their hair in stretched styles like twist outs, flat twists, or braid outs? Do you like to alternate between wearing your hair straight or curly? Your hair should be cut in a stretched state, either blown out or cut wet with tension. Stretched cutting will work best for you because it will ensure visual accuracy when you are styling your hair. Note if you choose to wear your hair in it’s naturally curly state, this type of cut does not account for the variety of curl patterns on your head. so you may have a different shape from what you expected.

If you wear your hair in its natural curly state the majority of the time, then you should opt for either a dry cut with your curls in tact or a wet cut with loose tension. This type of cut will account for the variety of curl patterns on your head and the shrinkage that comes with each of them. Note, when your hair is cut this way, if you choose to straighten your hair or wear it in a stretched state, there may be some areas that appear inaccurate or random.

While there is no right way or wrong way to cut hair, different methods may be better suited to your preferences and your lifestyle. Don’t follow trends on the internet and consult with a licensed professional to determine what works best for your and your unique hair needs.
